Overview:
In Without a Paddle three young guys go into the Oregon wilderness in search of lost treasure. They take a canoe upriver and everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Hunted by two backwoods farmers, they encounter death-defying rapids, tree-hugging hippie chicks and a crazy old mountain man played by Burt Reynolds.

The Motion Picture Association of America's reasons for giving Without a Paddle a PG-13 rating pretty much sum up the movie: drug content, sexual material, language, crude humor and some violence. Beyond that, there's not much else. Real laughs that aren't centered on bodily functions or altered states are few and far between.

In Without a Paddle movies fish-out-of-water story, a trio of 30-year-old buddies, friends since boyhood, embark on an adventure in the Oregon wilderness to find a lost treasure they had obsessed about as kids. They undertake the trip as a kind of tribute to the fourth member of their close-knit group, whose funeral they have just attended.

But canoeing up a perilous river presents more adventure than they bargained for in Without a Paddle: an encounter with a black bear; a run-in with a couple of backwoods pot farmers who chase the guys with an arsenal of automatic weapons and hand grenades; and a fantasy-style sequence with a pair of sensual, hirsute tree-huggers.
Most of Without a Paddle movie's gags ? not to mention its entire plot ? are revealed in the trailer. So, if you've seen that, you might want to save your money.
But if you must go, leave those under age 13 at home.

When Without a Paddle movies primary characters weren't much older than 13 themselves, they promised each other to "do great things." But reality intruded on those childhood dreams. Now, Dan (Seth Green) is a doctor plagued with neuroses. He fears the dark, enclosed places and cellophane. Jerry (Matthew Lillard) has a loving girlfriend, but he prefers surfing to growing up and getting married. Then there's the Harley-riding, handsome ne'er do well Tom (Dax Shepard), who blames his loser father for his own bad luck to round of Without a Paddle movies trio of heroes. Their buddy Billy, who died in Costa Rica in a parasailing accident, may have been the life of the quartet, but we never see him as an adult. Noting the bevy of girls at the funeral service, Dan notes, "It was like a discotheque with a coffin in the middle."

As they search for the treasure in Without a Paddle stashed by a legendary bank robber, the three friends are chased by Lynyrd and Skynyrd, the hillbilly hemp barons' two snarling Rottweilers. The trio and the weed farmers serenade each other with Culture Club's Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. And then they meet up with a mountain man played by Burt Reynolds, who provides the movie's brief highlight. In a kind of homage to Deliverance, he has been living in the wilderness for 30 years. Fortunately, in Without a Paddle there are no entreaties to squeal like a pig.

In a summer filled with dumb comedies, Without a Paddle might prove to be the dumbest. Think Road Trip meets City Slickers. Then dial the humor down a few notches, and you're left Without a Paddle.
